Hi...I won%26#39;t need a car once in town. What%26#39;s the best way to get from the airport to the Hyatt Regency? About how long will it take at 6:00 p.m.?

Take MARTA to Peachtree Center, which should take 15-20 minutes from the airport. From there is will be an easy walk to your hotel.

Downtown has some excellent restaurants. The top choices, though pricey, are BLT Steak, FAB, and Room at Twelve. I ate at BLT recently and cannot stop raving about it. FAB, too, is fantastic, with a skate wing that is amazing. Trader Vic%26#39;s is close in the Hilton, and is incredibly fun on Thursdays when the band Tongo Hiti plays.

Where downtown falls short is in mid-range and inexpensive restaurants. If I were you I would take MARTA to midtown for those. If you%26#39;ll tell us what you%26#39;re looking for I%26#39;ll be glad to make some suggestions. If you need to eat close to your hotel, I%26#39;ll list some options. None are particularly fabulous, but they%26#39;re decent and nearby: Azio, Mama Ninfa%26#39;s, Corner Bakery (the chain), Slice, Sidebar. Rosa%26#39;s Pizza is very casual but excellent. There%26#39;s a food court at Peachtree Center that is convenient, but nothing to write home about. Willy%26#39;s (Ca style burritos) and Kameels (Mediterranean) are the best options in that food court.

MARTA Subway from the Atlanta Airport, exit Peachtree Center (N1), and follow the signs for the Hyatt Regency. Once you top the tallest escalator in the southeast, continue walking through the Peachtree Center Food Court; looking up you will see a sign directing you to the Hyatt Hotel by way of a pedestrian bridge. Very easy. Trip time about 25 minutes.

We are in the initial planning stages of coming to Atlanta for a conference in November. We will be back and forth from the GWCC to our hotel each day. We are seriously considering the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. Any reviews on this? Comments or suggestions?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Nov 2006. It was clean and simple but just what we needed. The views of the mountains were spectacular. The hotel is on an incline and it%26#39;s a great location. A mile to downtown. You can walk it but there%26#39;s no sidewalks and the roads are steep and wind around.

There%26#39;s not many places to stay in the area so your options are limited.

Where to stay near Dahlonega

We%26#39;ve stayed at that Holiday Inn Express twice. The first time was OK, the second time we had problems (dirty room, front desk staff attitude).

On the other hand, we stayed once at the Days Inn next door and it was a disaster (although this was several years ago).

Dahlonega%26#39;s best known for cabin rentals, not hotels. Depending on how many nights you%26#39;re staying, I%26#39;d say either take the HI Express or maybe check out one of the B%26amp;Bs.

There is no where in Savannah that serves that dish. It sounds good, though.

I think it%26#39;s one of those ';sort of'; southern dishes. My grandmother used to do a chicken cooked in tomatoes dish with the onions, peppers, etc, but I am sure that she never in her whole life owned a can of curry. Nor did she use garlic. It just wasn%26#39;t one of her things.

However, the general recipe was about the same. It was good and enjoyable. I had never heard it called Country Captain either. It was just Chicken and Tomatoes. Of course, I date back a loooonnnggg time, so the dish could be something that%26#39;s fairly new by that name in our area.

There are a lot of Southern Recipes that use Thyme and Parsley along with the usual seasonings.

The recipe is found in the Georgia Heritage cookbook of the Colonial Dames of the State of Georgia. I%26#39;ve never seen it in any Savannah restaurant. My husband is in Ft.Benning for basic training, and he gets a 36 hour pass before he starts AIT after he gets done with basic and he is going to be done with basic on the 17th of April, but will they give him his 36 hour pass on Easter weekend which is the weekend before or will they give it to him the two days after he gets done with basic before AIT?

Trying to make a last minute spring break trip for my girls, young teenagers.. They love coming to the mountains, having a outdoor fire in fire pit, trout fishing and easy hikes to waterfalls. but the youngest is terrified of really tiny, twisted mountain roads to get to and from the cabins.., anyway it is April and in case the weather is yucky what can you do around Blue ridge with older kids? Blue Ridge is only 75 minutes from Town Center Mall with shopping, restaurants, etcetera. In Blue Ridge, you can always ride the scenic train to McCaysville. There are lots of shops in Blue Ridge. The bad thing is that it%26#39;s early April and the weather if ';iffy';. For example, on Monday night and Tuesday (April 6/7) there is a 25% chance of snow. The later into April you wait, the nicer the weather gets. As soon as nice weather comes, you can rent pontoon boats at the Lake Blue Ridge Marina. The lake will be full soon. The Ocoee River olympic site is aprox 15 miles away and is a beautiful area.

There is a comedy club in downtown on Marietta, but it is in a terrible neighborhood and is really ghetto. Avoid that. The only other comedy clubs near Atlanta are in Sandy Springs and Roswell.

I would recommend instead going to an improv show or comedic play at Dad%26#39;s Garage Theater or Whole World Theatre.

Whole World is about 2.5 miles from the Ritz. Short cab ride, or you can easily take MARTA from the Peachtree Center station up to Arts Center -- Whole World is a block west of the Arts Center station. Exit the station onto West Peachtree Street, go south (left) to the crosswalk at West Peachtree and 15th, cross the street, and cut through the parking lot to get from West Peachtree over to Spring Street. Whole World will be almost directly across Spring Street.

Whole World is a lot of fun.

Actually, though, Dad%26#39;s does have shows on Saturday. This Saturday they%26#39;ll have The B Team at 8:00 and the Theater Sports (which is improv) at 10:30. I%26#39;m partial to Dad%26#39;s Garage, in large part because I%26#39;ve been there so many times over the years, but both have really funny shows. You can%26#39;t go wrong either way.

I share your feelings about riding Marta, but this person is not travel savvy. She rarely leaves her small town. Sad, but true. We%26#39;re just trying to find an easy way for her to get to the airport.

Seriously, though, she just sits down on the only train available at North Springs, and stays on the same train until it dead ends and tells her to get off. That%26#39;s easier than trying to find the shuttle pick-up at the airport, which is a bit of a hike from baggage claim.

Palm Sunday Mass

We will be in Savannah this weekend and would like to attend Sunday mass at St. John Cathedral. Are all the morning masses the same? I read on a previous post for St. Patrick%26#39;s Day that the 8am was a quiet mass, the 10:30 a male voice and the later mass a female voice. Is this true of every Sunday, or just St. Patrick%26#39;s Day? We live in a very small rural town in Ohio and I would love for my sons to get to experience a truly amazing mass service in a beautiful cathedral. Also, are they all the palm service? At our church, only 1 service is the palm service. I looked at the cathedral website, but didn%26#39;t see the info listed.

We were in Canada last year where 2 different pubs (linked with micro breweries) offered a sample of all their beers.

One offered 7 different samples in small glasses (each about a 6th of a pint) whilst the other had 9 different ones with a description of each one (you were even offered advice as to the order in which to drink them).

The Distillery is also really good if you like beer they offer a sampler (I think one dark, one light/pale, and one mixed) and also many craft beers not available at other bars in Savannah.

If you only need 1 bed, I%26#39;d suggest you try Priceline for a 4* hotel downtown. The 4* options downtown will be within walking distance to the CNN Center. See www.biddingfortravel.com for how to use Priceline effectively.

If you don%26#39;t want to use Priceline, the Omni is in the CNN Center. There%26#39;s an Embassy suites across the street and a new Hilton Garden Inn next to that. All would be good choices.

Tybee Island - Great Girl's Getaway!

My Mom, three sisters, and I (all over 50) take a vacation together each year. We come from the east coast, west coast, and northeast and each year we try to find a new beach spot on the east coast.

This year, although it%26#39;s not on the ocean, we decided to visit Savannah, GA. What a nice surprise to discover Tybee Island was only 15 minutes away. So, rather than stay in a hotel room in Savannah, we rented a condo on Tybee. After researching lodging on the Island, we rented Sandpiper #306 through Tybee Vacation Rentals (TVR). What a great choice - TVR was highly recommended by reviewers on TripAdvisor.com and they were right.

The 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo was oceanfront, spacious, clean, nicely decorated, and had everything we needed for a week%26#39;s stay. The staff at TVR were friendly and very responsive to any request.

We enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere on Tybee. We walked the beach every morning and evening; visited the local shops - some tacky-tourist, some nice (check out Seaside Sisters); ate at a couple of restaurants (delicious onion rings and RazzRitas at Fannies at the Beach, good pizza from Cousin Vinnie%26#39;s); and toured the local points of interest (forts and museums and a great old lighthouse).

Then, in a matter of minutes, we could drive to Savannah and stroll along River and Bay Streets in the afternoons. We visited beautiful Forsythe Park and had fun in the City Market. We%26#39;re all fans of Food Network, so we had to eat at Paula Deen%26#39;s Lady and Son Restaurant (good, traditional Southern buffet) and Uncle Bubba%26#39;s Oyster House (fabulous chargrilled oysters).

We didn%26#39;t eat out a lot, because we treasured spending time together in the kitchen of our condo as we prepared our meals. Then, later in the evenings, we sat around the table playing Yahtzee and Monopoly, sipping wine as we talked, laughed, and caught up on each other%26#39;s news.

What a great week with family! Tybee - we%26#39;ll be back!

What to see/do/eat on SSI?

My hubby and I are stopping at SSI for 3 days on our way home from a trip to Spring Training in 2 weeks (our first trip; we usually vacation on Hilton Head Island). We%26#39;re staying at the Saint Simons Inn at the Lighthouse. We are in our mid-50%26#39;s and plan to spend plenty of time walking the beach and riding bikes, but we%26#39;d like to spend a little time seeing the sights in the Saint Simons Island/Jekyll Island area. St Simons Island is very different from Hilton Head in the way of our daily life. The pace is much slower here. We enjoy nature, meeting people and having an enjoyable meal and drink. There are places to listen to live music like the village pub as well as good restaurants like The Georgia Sea Grill, Delaneys and Nazzaro%26#39;s for dinner. Barbara Jeans for lunch. But there are also the galleries and the historic sites. One not mentioned is Christ Church near Fort Federica, and the Wesley Monument. This is towards the north end of the island and very beautiful and worth exploring. The beaches are found on the east side of the island ';East Beach'; with an old Coast Guard Station that is now a Museum. Rent bikes, shop and just find new friends. You will love it here.

My favorite thing to do when I go to SSI is to eat!!!

You MUST make reservations at the Georgia Sea Grille, it%26#39;s a must! Upscale, seafood dining.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. We enjoyed our stay at SSI. Our only disappointment was the beach; even at low tide, the East Beach was small and crowded. Since the beach is probably the #1 ';requirement'; for our travels, we were disappointed. But even so, we%26#39;d like to make a return trip to SSI at some point. Again, thanks for the advice! ;-)

The Varsity does have the best chili dogs AND onion rings. There is no shortage of oil there! My husband HAS to go to the Varsity for chili dogs when we are in Atlanta. Winter is the best bet if tornadoes worry you, but understand that there%26#39;s no time of the year that%26#39;s immune from them -- they can happen any time there%26#39;s unusually warm or cold weather followed by a contrasting front moving through. That%26#39;s particularly true of someplace like Atlanta that has moderate weather year-round -- even in December or January there%26#39;s still a decent chance of an unusual warm spell followed by a sudden influx of colder weather, and tornadoes aren%26#39;t unknown even in those months.

That being said, spring and summer are probably the peak times for storms, and summer has the heat and humidity you%26#39;re trying to avoid. Fall%26#39;s a good suggestion, as long as you realize that you may not be able to really count on avoiding the heat and humidity until at least the beginning of October -- it%26#39;s still pretty muggy for much of September down here most years. Atlanta%26#39;s extensive tree cover makes it beautiful in both the spring and the fall. If you weren%26#39;t worried about storms, I%26#39;d recommend visiting right now, when the green is back all over town and most of the dogwoods and azaleas are in bloom.

The best time to visit is now! I%26#39;ve lived 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta for 20 years and have never worried about tornadoes. The azaleas, dogwoods trees, cherry trees, tulips and everything else on in bloom now.

We%26#39;ll be taking our grandkids to the Georgia Aquarium in May. We%26#39;re staying at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown on Spring St. Does anyone know if there are some fast food restaurant nearby, or places within walking distance of the hotel? We%26#39;re not sure how the prices are at the hotel restaurant, but we sure would like to have some ';cheap eat'; options.

Breakfast for Kids in Downtown Atlanta

There%26#39;s a food court in the CNN Center building across the park from the Marriott and the Aquarium with an Arbys, Blimpies, Chick-Fil-A, a Chinese place and a Japanese place that also serves Thai, Dunkin Donuts, a couple of wrap/sandwich places, Moe%26#39;s, a pizza place, Taco Bell, Wendy%26#39;s, and Starbucks, among others.

There%26#39;s also a location of the local Landmark Diner chain at 60 Luckie Street (just a few blocks from your hotel) that%26#39;s open 24 hours and serves all the usual diner breakfast stuff, and is reasonably kid-friendly. Besides the breakfast stuff, they have a kid%26#39;s menu with burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, roast beef and turkey sandwiches, chicken fingers, spaghetti, and mozzarella sticks.

Around the corner from there, on Broad Street, there%26#39;s also a concentration of quick-lunch style places that cater to downtown office crowd (a few chain fast-food places, but mostly local/independent places), some of which will have breakfast.

Havent had much luck getting a good price in savannah with either site; we usually book our hotel in Hilton Head (on the beach) and drive to savannah. I think i got a four star in HHI last fall for around $70/night plus fees. Got a similar hotel in the summer for around $90/night.

Priceline or Hotwire for hotels in Savannah?

I just got a four star on priceline for more than the priceline posted regular rates. Disappointing to say the least. Across the river, too.

Is it the Westin? I went ahead and tried Priceline... we ended up with the Westin for 126 plus fees.

The trip advisor reviews for the resort are mixed, but hopefully it will be ok.

This is an amusement park/arcade off of BASS ROAD which is off 1-75 N. Many indoor arcade games. But outside, there is PUTT PUTT, race cars, think there%26#39;s a water type boat ride, and one of those jumping harness type thingees that you can get into. There%26#39;s a snack bar too. Great place for throwing birthday parties for the kids. Have adult themed nights also.

last time i was there, no entrance fee. You know how those arcade games can go. Some can be one token, others four or more. Your son will probably have an idea what these games cost these days.

Starcadia has gone out of business...a victim of the recession...closed for several months now; the owners said they just couldn%26#39;t survive anymore. It was a great place for children%26#39;s birthday parties.

Pack Rat at 14th %26amp; Butler rents bicycles and boogie boards. That%26#39;s where we rented last year. Butler is the main street through Tybee. Hopefully, in today%26#39;s economy they have survived and are still there. Have a great time on Tybee.
