airport to hyatt regency

Hi...I won%26#39;t need a car once in town. What%26#39;s the best way to get from the airport to the Hyatt Regency? About how long will it take at 6:00 p.m.?

Any good restaurants in that area?

Just put ';restaurant'; in the search box above your question, and you will get numerous threads on the subject.

airport to hyatt regency

Take MARTA to Peachtree Center, which should take 15-20 minutes from the airport. From there is will be an easy walk to your hotel.

Downtown has some excellent restaurants. The top choices, though pricey, are BLT Steak, FAB, and Room at Twelve. I ate at BLT recently and cannot stop raving about it. FAB, too, is fantastic, with a skate wing that is amazing. Trader Vic%26#39;s is close in the Hilton, and is incredibly fun on Thursdays when the band Tongo Hiti plays.

Where downtown falls short is in mid-range and inexpensive restaurants. If I were you I would take MARTA to midtown for those. If you%26#39;ll tell us what you%26#39;re looking for I%26#39;ll be glad to make some suggestions. If you need to eat close to your hotel, I%26#39;ll list some options. None are particularly fabulous, but they%26#39;re decent and nearby: Azio, Mama Ninfa%26#39;s, Corner Bakery (the chain), Slice, Sidebar. Rosa%26#39;s Pizza is very casual but excellent. There%26#39;s a food court at Peachtree Center that is convenient, but nothing to write home about. Willy%26#39;s (Ca style burritos) and Kameels (Mediterranean) are the best options in that food court.

MARTA Subway from the Atlanta Airport, exit Peachtree Center (N1), and follow the signs for the Hyatt Regency. Once you top the tallest escalator in the southeast, continue walking through the Peachtree Center Food Court; looking up you will see a sign directing you to the Hyatt Hotel by way of a pedestrian bridge. Very easy. Trip time about 25 minutes.

Thank you for the great directions using Marta. I%26#39;ll have to go to Trader Vic%26#39;s for a drink at least.

  • Dinner suggestions

We are in the initial planning stages of coming to Atlanta for a conference in November. We will be back and forth from the GWCC to our hotel each day. We are seriously considering the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. Any reviews on this? Comments or suggestions?

Also, one of us has a gluten allergy. Do you know of any restaurants that are accomodating?

    Thanks!

    Dinner suggestions

Run a search on gluten on this forum. There is a prior topic on the discussion, and one woman linked to a website that discusses accommodating restaurants in Atlanta. I know that PF Changs and Shaun%26#39;s will accommodate, and Shaun%26#39;s is excellent.

The Hilton Garden Inn is a newer hotel, so I would expect it to be nice.

Thanks for your help! I%26#39;m just starting to plan this trip, but your advice is very welcome.

    Where to stay near Dahlonega

I%26#39;ll be traveling to Dahlonega Ga in May. I would like advice on where to stay. None of the hotels in Dahlonega have good reviews. Any advice on where to stay? I%26#39;m looking for reasonable price, clean and safe location within a 15 mile radius.

    Thank you for your assistance!

    Where to stay near Dahlonega

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Nov 2006. It was clean and simple but just what we needed. The views of the mountains were spectacular. The hotel is on an incline and it%26#39;s a great location. A mile to downtown. You can walk it but there%26#39;s no sidewalks and the roads are steep and wind around.

There%26#39;s not many places to stay in the area so your options are limited.

    Where to stay near Dahlonega

We%26#39;ve stayed at that Holiday Inn Express twice. The first time was OK, the second time we had problems (dirty room, front desk staff attitude).

On the other hand, we stayed once at the Days Inn next door and it was a disaster (although this was several years ago).

Dahlonega%26#39;s best known for cabin rentals, not hotels. Depending on how many nights you%26#39;re staying, I%26#39;d say either take the HI Express or maybe check out one of the B%26amp;Bs.

Thank You! I%26#39;ve decided to go to Charleston instead! :)

Take a look at the Park Place Hotel down on the Square.. Right in town, new and beautiful rooms, flat screens, large Suites, free Starbucks and wine.. Second to none

If you want to stay at a special place, Mtn Laurel Creek Inn %26amp; Spa just only ten minutes north of the town square just past Wolf Mtn Winery. 5 guest suites to choose from, they have a spa and just opened up a pub that features North GA wines. No TV%26#39;s in the room, so if you want quite and relaxation, this is the place. You can also check http://www.dahlonegalodging.com for a listing of all the B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the area.

when will I know when I can visit

I have gotten several letters from my son who left March 17. When will I know when he has leave?

    country captain

can somebody tell me a restaurant that serves country captain?

    country captain

you would have to tell me what country captain is

    country captain

Lived in the south my whole life, and have never heard of this, guess i am not a true southerner:

This dish, known throughout Georgia and much of the southern United States, dates to the early 1800s. There are several versions of its origin. One story says that it was introduced to Savannah by the

captain of a vessel that plied the spice route from India. Another tale says that it%26#39;s named for the native non-commissioned officers in India--';Country Captains.'; A known fact is that it was the favorite

entree of President Franklin Roosevelt, introduced to him by his cook at Warm Springs, Georgia.

1 frying chicken, cut in pieces

    1/2 c flour

salt and ground pepper, to taste

    2 tbsp vegetable oil

    2 tbsp butter

    1/2 c finely chopped onion

    1 clove garlic

3/4 c finely chopped green pepper

    1 c sliced mushrooms

    1/2 c raisins

    1 tbsp curry powder

    1 tsp thyme

    2 c chopped canned tomatoes

    1/2 c toasted, slivered almonds

I%26#39;ve never heard of it either and my family has always been from the South.

There is no where in Savannah that serves that dish. It sounds good, though.

I think it%26#39;s one of those ';sort of'; southern dishes. My grandmother used to do a chicken cooked in tomatoes dish with the onions, peppers, etc, but I am sure that she never in her whole life owned a can of curry. Nor did she use garlic. It just wasn%26#39;t one of her things.

However, the general recipe was about the same. It was good and enjoyable. I had never heard it called Country Captain either. It was just Chicken and Tomatoes. Of course, I date back a loooonnnggg time, so the dish could be something that%26#39;s fairly new by that name in our area.

There are a lot of Southern Recipes that use Thyme and Parsley along with the usual seasonings.

There is a great recipe for Country Captain in the Herb Traub%26#39;s Pirates House Cookbook

so sixth gen, does that mean they serve it at pirate ?

you are all cold.... it was in the news and it sounded good, I%26#39;m guessing I%26#39;ts a lie or no place serves it......

Hominy Grill in Charleston serves it - according to a NYTimes article from January 23, 2009.

    nytimes.com/2009/鈥?/a>

Country Captain originated at FDR%26#39;s White House by one of his cooks. That cook later worked for an old Georgia family. The recipe is found in the Georgia Heritage cookbook of the Colonial Dames of the State of Georgia. I%26#39;ve never seen it in any Savannah restaurant. The use of the word ';captain'; replaces ';capon'; in the original name.

  • Basic Training 36 hour pass

My husband is in Ft.Benning for basic training, and he gets a 36 hour pass before he starts AIT after he gets done with basic and he is going to be done with basic on the 17th of April, but will they give him his 36 hour pass on Easter weekend which is the weekend before or will they give it to him the two days after he gets done with basic before AIT?

    Basic Training 36 hour pass

Soldiers do not get passes while in Basic Training (unless it is a family emergency). Also, Easter is not a recognized federal holiday. Don%26#39;t count on him getting a pass for Easter weekend.

    Blue ridge vs Brevard nc

Trying to make a last minute spring break trip for my girls, young teenagers.. They love coming to the mountains, having a outdoor fire in fire pit, trout fishing and easy hikes to waterfalls. but the youngest is terrified of really tiny, twisted mountain roads to get to and from the cabins.., anyway it is April and in case the weather is yucky what can you do around Blue ridge with older kids? We were looking into Brevard due to the two parks there mt pigsah and dupont, but blue ridge is closer, or maybe blairsville. open to suggestions.. Thanks

    Blue ridge vs Brevard nc

Blue Ridge is only 75 minutes from Town Center Mall with shopping, restaurants, etcetera. In Blue Ridge, you can always ride the scenic train to McCaysville. There are lots of shops in Blue Ridge. The bad thing is that it%26#39;s early April and the weather if ';iffy';. For example, on Monday night and Tuesday (April 6/7) there is a 25% chance of snow. The later into April you wait, the nicer the weather gets. As soon as nice weather comes, you can rent pontoon boats at the Lake Blue Ridge Marina. The lake will be full soon. The Ocoee River olympic site is aprox 15 miles away and is a beautiful area.

  • Great Comedy Club this weekend in Atlanta?

We are staying at the Ritz downtown and wanted to see if there were any really good Comedy Clubs fairly close ...... thanks!!

Great Comedy Club this weekend in Atlanta?

Your only real option is the Laughing Skull Lounge next to the Vortex in midtown:

    http://www.vortexcomedy.com/

There is a comedy club in downtown on Marietta, but it is in a terrible neighborhood and is really ghetto. Avoid that. The only other comedy clubs near Atlanta are in Sandy Springs and Roswell.

I would recommend instead going to an improv show or comedic play at Dad%26#39;s Garage Theater or Whole World Theatre.

    www.dadsgarage.com

    www.wholeworldtheatre.com

Great Comedy Club this weekend in Atlanta?

thanks :) - dads only has shows on friday nights ............ how close would the other one be to our hotel at the downtown ritz?

Whole World is about 2.5 miles from the Ritz. Short cab ride, or you can easily take MARTA from the Peachtree Center station up to Arts Center -- Whole World is a block west of the Arts Center station. Exit the station onto West Peachtree Street, go south (left) to the crosswalk at West Peachtree and 15th, cross the street, and cut through the parking lot to get from West Peachtree over to Spring Street. Whole World will be almost directly across Spring Street.

Whole World is a lot of fun.

Actually, though, Dad%26#39;s does have shows on Saturday. This Saturday they%26#39;ll have The B Team at 8:00 and the Theater Sports (which is improv) at 10:30. I%26#39;m partial to Dad%26#39;s Garage, in large part because I%26#39;ve been there so many times over the years, but both have really funny shows. You can%26#39;t go wrong either way.

The Punchline isnt too far from there (10-15 miles), the Ritz may provide some transportation options:

    Rt 400 shuttle to airport

    Help Atlanta experts!

I have a family member who would like to take a shuttle to the airport from a hotel along 400 - as far north as possible, say Windward Parkway. They live in Dawsonville.

We would greatly appreciate your adice.

    SunNut

    Rt 400 shuttle to airport

Why not just take MARTA to the North Springs station? They can park there during their trip, and drive home.

    Rt 400 shuttle to airport

    If you really do want to pay for and take a shuttle, you can find several by just googling ';atlanta airport shuttle.';

I share your feelings about riding Marta, but this person is not travel savvy. She rarely leaves her small town. Sad, but true. We%26#39;re just trying to find an easy way for her to get to the airport.

    SunNut

Seriously, though, she just sits down on the only train available at North Springs, and stays on the same train until it dead ends and tells her to get off. That%26#39;s easier than trying to find the shuttle pick-up at the airport, which is a bit of a hike from baggage claim.

Thank you for your helpful advice. I will pass it along.

    Palm Sunday Mass

We will be in Savannah this weekend and would like to attend Sunday mass at St. John Cathedral. Are all the morning masses the same? I read on a previous post for St. Patrick%26#39;s Day that the 8am was a quiet mass, the 10:30 a male voice and the later mass a female voice. Is this true of every Sunday, or just St. Patrick%26#39;s Day? We live in a very small rural town in Ohio and I would love for my sons to get to experience a truly amazing mass service in a beautiful cathedral. Also, are they all the palm service? At our church, only 1 service is the palm service. I looked at the cathedral website, but didn%26#39;t see the info listed.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

    Palm Sunday Mass

On St. Pat%26#39;s there is only one mass - the 8am.

Every Sunday, including Palm Sunday and Easter, the schedule is 8am, 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm(Latin Rite).

    8am - no music

    10am - men%26#39;s choir

    11:30am - woman%26#39;s choir

They also have a 5:30pm vigil every Saturday evening.

    Palm Sunday Mass

Another great way to keep up with times when travelling is the following website:

    www.masstimes.org

I would recommend getting there early especially if you decide to go to 10:00 or 11:30 mass - also being Palm Sunday it will be packed. They also do a Latin mass at 1:00pm - it is really neat I been to it a couple of times (not enough to remember anything, I just follow the leader).

  • Brew pubs/micro breweries

We were in Canada last year where 2 different pubs (linked with micro breweries) offered a sample of all their beers.

One offered 7 different samples in small glasses (each about a 6th of a pint) whilst the other had 9 different ones with a description of each one (you were even offered advice as to the order in which to drink them).

Do any of the brew pubs do that in Savannah?

    Brew pubs/micro breweries

This is the local brew pubs.

    www.moonriverbrewing.com/

    Brew pubs/micro breweries

And yes they do have a nice sampler selection and very knowledgeable people if you have questions about the different brews.

All their beer is brewed on site, behind big windows so if anything is going on, you can watch.

I agree on moon river, not much else going on in that area SE GA is kind of a beer waste land..

Some of the beer sites are showing a Hilton Head Brewpub over in HH which is not that far away either.

Scowick, my home computer is dead and my work computer is actually blocking my access to the website for Moon River Brewing. Can you tell me where it located? thanks!

Also the historic district finally has a good beer pub, Distillary. Located at Liberty and Martin Luther King.

Moon River Brewing Company is located at 21 West Bay Street right across the street from the Hyatt.

The Distillery is also really good if you like beer they offer a sampler (I think one dark, one light/pale, and one mixed) and also many craft beers not available at other bars in Savannah.

    Hotel help

Arriving on a Wednesday night, after 10pm. Needing a hotel for one night. Taking the CNN VIP tour the next morning at 8am. Any suggests on where to stay? I hate to spend more than $100 since we will only be sleeping there one night, not staying long, but don%26#39;t want to be in a rundown place either. Also need something fairly close to CNN also. Not asking much, am I? Thanks for the help!

    Hotel help

If you only need 1 bed, I%26#39;d suggest you try Priceline for a 4* hotel downtown. The 4* options downtown will be within walking distance to the CNN Center. See www.biddingfortravel.com for how to use Priceline effectively.

If you don%26#39;t want to use Priceline, the Omni is in the CNN Center. There%26#39;s an Embassy suites across the street and a new Hilton Garden Inn next to that. All would be good choices.

    Hotel help

I agree that Priceline is your best bet. Otherwise, you%26#39;re not likely to find anywhere under $100 in that area that isn%26#39;t a roach motel.

I have never used Priceline places, we are traveling the first week of September, so when should I start ';bidding';?

You can get lots of advice on biddingfortravel.com, which has tips for Priceline bidding. I know you don%26#39;t want to bid too early, but don%26#39;t want to wait too late, but don%26#39;t know what the exact window is. I would suggest watching prices in Hotwire too.

There%26#39;s an FAQ on www.biddingfortravel.com that tells you all you%26#39;ll need to know. It%26#39;s a lot of reading, but it%26#39;s worth to be fully educated for the best deal.

Tybee Island - Great Girl's Getaway!

My Mom, three sisters, and I (all over 50) take a vacation together each year. We come from the east coast, west coast, and northeast and each year we try to find a new beach spot on the east coast.

This year, although it%26#39;s not on the ocean, we decided to visit Savannah, GA. What a nice surprise to discover Tybee Island was only 15 minutes away. So, rather than stay in a hotel room in Savannah, we rented a condo on Tybee. After researching lodging on the Island, we rented Sandpiper #306 through Tybee Vacation Rentals (TVR). What a great choice - TVR was highly recommended by reviewers on TripAdvisor.com and they were right.

The 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo was oceanfront, spacious, clean, nicely decorated, and had everything we needed for a week%26#39;s stay. The staff at TVR were friendly and very responsive to any request.

We enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere on Tybee. We walked the beach every morning and evening; visited the local shops - some tacky-tourist, some nice (check out Seaside Sisters); ate at a couple of restaurants (delicious onion rings and RazzRitas at Fannies at the Beach, good pizza from Cousin Vinnie%26#39;s); and toured the local points of interest (forts and museums and a great old lighthouse).

Then, in a matter of minutes, we could drive to Savannah and stroll along River and Bay Streets in the afternoons. We visited beautiful Forsythe Park and had fun in the City Market. We%26#39;re all fans of Food Network, so we had to eat at Paula Deen%26#39;s Lady and Son Restaurant (good, traditional Southern buffet) and Uncle Bubba%26#39;s Oyster House (fabulous chargrilled oysters).

We didn%26#39;t eat out a lot, because we treasured spending time together in the kitchen of our condo as we prepared our meals. Then, later in the evenings, we sat around the table playing Yahtzee and Monopoly, sipping wine as we talked, laughed, and caught up on each other%26#39;s news.

What a great week with family! Tybee - we%26#39;ll be back!

  • What to see/do/eat on SSI?

My hubby and I are stopping at SSI for 3 days on our way home from a trip to Spring Training in 2 weeks (our first trip; we usually vacation on Hilton Head Island). We%26#39;re staying at the Saint Simons Inn at the Lighthouse. We are in our mid-50%26#39;s and plan to spend plenty of time walking the beach and riding bikes, but we%26#39;d like to spend a little time seeing the sights in the Saint Simons Island/Jekyll Island area. Any recommendations on what we must see? Any recommendations on where we should eat? Thanks!

    What to see/do/eat on SSI?

fort fredricka, the john wesley oak, and the site of the battle of bloody march are site seeing destinations, for eats, you are next door to southern soul bbq, barbara jeans crab cakes and the 4th of may are in the nearby village too. for finer dining you are steps from the georgia sea grill and jmac%26#39;s. enjoy your trip.

    What to see/do/eat on SSI?

St Simons Island is very different from Hilton Head in the way of our daily life. The pace is much slower here. We enjoy nature, meeting people and having an enjoyable meal and drink. There are places to listen to live music like the village pub as well as good restaurants like The Georgia Sea Grill, Delaneys and Nazzaro%26#39;s for dinner. Barbara Jeans for lunch. But there are also the galleries and the historic sites. One not mentioned is Christ Church near Fort Federica, and the Wesley Monument. This is towards the north end of the island and very beautiful and worth exploring. The beaches are found on the east side of the island ';East Beach'; with an old Coast Guard Station that is now a Museum. Rent bikes, shop and just find new friends. You will love it here.

My favorite thing to do when I go to SSI is to eat!!!

You MUST make reservations at the Georgia Sea Grille, it%26#39;s a must! Upscale, seafood dining.

    My other recs are:

4th of May for breakfast and lunch (Butter Pecan French Toast is my fave)

Mullet Bay for a drink and bar food plus they have nice outdoor dining

    CrabDaddy%26#39;s for broiled/grilled seafood

    Crab Trap for fried seafood

Frederica House for steaks and seafood

    Moondoggies for pizza

Sweet Mama%26#39;s for ice cream and desserts

Gnat%26#39;s Landing for lunch or dinner

Enjoy! I%26#39;m going to visit my grandmother who lives there in a few weeks and I can%26#39;t wait!!!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. We enjoyed our stay at SSI. Our only disappointment was the beach; even at low tide, the East Beach was small and crowded. Since the beach is probably the #1 ';requirement'; for our travels, we were disappointed. But even so, we%26#39;d like to make a return trip to SSI at some point. Again, thanks for the advice! ;-)

  • Best time to visit?

Want to avoid high heat and humidity, as well as dodge tornadoes. Suggestions?

    Best time to visit?

    Fall - September / October

    Best time to visit?

Winter is the best bet if tornadoes worry you, but understand that there%26#39;s no time of the year that%26#39;s immune from them -- they can happen any time there%26#39;s unusually warm or cold weather followed by a contrasting front moving through. That%26#39;s particularly true of someplace like Atlanta that has moderate weather year-round -- even in December or January there%26#39;s still a decent chance of an unusual warm spell followed by a sudden influx of colder weather, and tornadoes aren%26#39;t unknown even in those months.

That being said, spring and summer are probably the peak times for storms, and summer has the heat and humidity you%26#39;re trying to avoid. Fall%26#39;s a good suggestion, as long as you realize that you may not be able to really count on avoiding the heat and humidity until at least the beginning of October -- it%26#39;s still pretty muggy for much of September down here most years. Atlanta%26#39;s extensive tree cover makes it beautiful in both the spring and the fall. If you weren%26#39;t worried about storms, I%26#39;d recommend visiting right now, when the green is back all over town and most of the dogwoods and azaleas are in bloom.

The best time to visit is now! I%26#39;ve lived 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta for 20 years and have never worried about tornadoes. The azaleas, dogwoods trees, cherry trees, tulips and everything else on in bloom now.

Breakfast for Kids in Downtown Atlanta

We%26#39;ll be taking our grandkids to the Georgia Aquarium in May. We%26#39;re staying at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown on Spring St. Does anyone know if there are some fast food restaurant nearby, or places within walking distance of the hotel? We%26#39;re not sure how the prices are at the hotel restaurant, but we sure would like to have some ';cheap eat'; options.

    (We%26#39;re not renting a car.)

    Thanks.

Breakfast for Kids in Downtown Atlanta

There%26#39;s a food court in the CNN Center building across the park from the Marriott and the Aquarium with an Arbys, Blimpies, Chick-Fil-A, a Chinese place and a Japanese place that also serves Thai, Dunkin Donuts, a couple of wrap/sandwich places, Moe%26#39;s, a pizza place, Taco Bell, Wendy%26#39;s, and Starbucks, among others.

There%26#39;s also a location of the local Landmark Diner chain at 60 Luckie Street (just a few blocks from your hotel) that%26#39;s open 24 hours and serves all the usual diner breakfast stuff, and is reasonably kid-friendly. Besides the breakfast stuff, they have a kid%26#39;s menu with burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, roast beef and turkey sandwiches, chicken fingers, spaghetti, and mozzarella sticks.

Around the corner from there, on Broad Street, there%26#39;s also a concentration of quick-lunch style places that cater to downtown office crowd (a few chain fast-food places, but mostly local/independent places), some of which will have breakfast.

Here%26#39;s a map to help get your bearings: http://tinyurl.com/cqqujw

Priceline or Hotwire for hotels in Savannah?

I%26#39;m trying to visit Savannah for an additional few days and I am trying to get a better hotel rate.

Havent had much luck getting a good price in savannah with either site; we usually book our hotel in Hilton Head (on the beach) and drive to savannah. I think i got a four star in HHI last fall for around $70/night plus fees. Got a similar hotel in the summer for around $90/night.

Priceline or Hotwire for hotels in Savannah?

I just got a four star on priceline for more than the priceline posted regular rates. Disappointing to say the least. Across the river, too.

Is it the Westin? I went ahead and tried Priceline... we ended up with the Westin for 126 plus fees.

The trip advisor reviews for the resort are mixed, but hopefully it will be ok.

    Starcadia

I know it%26#39;s there, just can%26#39;t find any info on Starcadia. Can someone tell me where it is and something about it?

    Starcadia

    what is it??????

    Starcadia

This is an amusement park/arcade off of BASS ROAD which is off 1-75 N. Many indoor arcade games. But outside, there is PUTT PUTT, race cars, think there%26#39;s a water type boat ride, and one of those jumping harness type thingees that you can get into. There%26#39;s a snack bar too. Great place for throwing birthday parties for the kids. Have adult themed nights also.

Thanks! my son has been there with a school activity, and I wanted to go with both my children soon. I think it will be a fun trip; just need to find out how much money is needed. :)

last time i was there, no entrance fee. You know how those arcade games can go. Some can be one token, others four or more. Your son will probably have an idea what these games cost these days.

Starcadia has gone out of business...a victim of the recession...closed for several months now; the owners said they just couldn%26#39;t survive anymore. It was a great place for children%26#39;s birthday parties.

Pack Rat at 14th %26amp; Butler rents bicycles and boogie boards. That%26#39;s where we rented last year. Butler is the main street through Tybee. Hopefully, in today%26#39;s economy they have survived and are still there. Have a great time on Tybee.

  • Need a couple of hotel choices with indoor pools...

We are heading down for a few days to go to six flags and the aquarium, etc. I need a fairly inexpensive hotel maybe somewhere on the perimeter with an indoor pool. My wife is pretty picky, so it must be clean and safe area. I have 3 year old twins, so it must have an indoor pool! Thanks for any help.

Need a couple of hotel choices with indoor pools...

If you run a search on this forum for ';indoor pool'; you will see lots of discussions on hotels with them. For some reason it%26#39;s quite a popular topic. If you are trying to stay outside of the city, look at the Cobb Galleria area and at the Perimeter Mall area.

Need a couple of hotel choices with indoor pools...

The following have indoor pools, and are a little expensive, but wont break the bank: The Omni is across the street from the Aquarium / Centenial Park. The Georgian Terrace is closer to midtown, across the street from Fox Theatre. The Westin Peachtree has one, but still has window damage from tornado. I cant remember if the Mariott has an indoor or roof-top pool. The expensive hotels will have them, and you might be able to steal a deal on priceline and get them at a good rate. Most of the hotels around the perimeter are not the better areas of town, with the exception of Vinings and Perimeter Center.

I just did some research on this just the other day since I was looking for the same thing. As far as downtown hotels, the only ones with indoor pools are the Westin Peachtree and the Marriott Marquis (The latter is an indoor/outdoor pool). The Omni%26#39;s pool is an outdoor pool and I believe it is closed for renovation. I only looked downtown so I don%26#39;t have info on other locations.

Connecting flight with 1hour 40 minute timeframe?

    Hello,

I will be flying from Sweden to Austin next October and I have 1 hour 40 minute ';layover'; in Atlanta. Will that be enough?

I flew in Atlanta a couple years ago and I remember the customs lines being very long...I think it took over an hour to get through.

I never had a connecting flight in the US before...I mean do I do the customs in Atlanta or in Austin?

I will only have carry on with me and I have all the flights in the same ticket. I mean it%26#39;s hard to believe they%26#39;d sell a ticket to me without thinking that I could make the flight...right...? :D

Personally I like the Atlanta airport...I think it%26#39;s easy to navigate so I guess I know where to run if I have to...

    Thanks.

Connecting flight with 1hour 40 minute timeframe?

With only carryon luggage, you should be fine. You%26#39;ll go through customs in Atlanta and then head to your connecting gate -- assume you%26#39;re on Delta for the ATL-AUS leg as they%26#39;re the only carrier with direct flights to AUS from ATL. Looking around online, I%26#39;m pretty sure I know which flight you%26#39;re booked on for the ATL-AUS leg -- right now, it%26#39;s scheduled to be an MD-80, which will probably depart from Concourse A or B -- a bit farther hike from the international concourse (E) where you%26#39;ll be arriving, but it still should be manageable. Most of the other Delta flights to AUS each day are on CRJ700/900 series planes, with most of them departing from Concourse B these days (my company%26#39;s based in Austin, so I fly ATL-AUS at least a few times a year).

One thing to keep in mind with flights booked this far out is that airlines juggle schedules, equipment, etc. constantly, and your 1 hr 40 min layover could grow or shrink significantly between now and October. Keep checking Delta%26#39;s web site occasionally between now and then and contact them to rebook if the connection ends up being much tighter than that. This is especially true with Delta right now as they attempt to digest Northwest%26#39;s routes, crews, and equipment -- there%26#39;ve been nightmare stories recently among frequent flyers about equipment and schedules changing often and right up to departure date, invalidating seat assignments, connections, etc., and generally causing havoc with travel plans.

Connecting flight with 1hour 40 minute timeframe?

    Thanks for the quick answer!

And thanks for the heads up about checking out the Delta schedules...I will do that regularly before the trip. Hope they schedule the flight a little bit later rather than earlier if they reschedule it...that way I have a little less tressful flight over the Atlantic ; )

Une day in Savannah - hotel

We%26#39;re going to be in Savannah with our 2 teen daughters for one night. I need hepl deciding b/w Hampton Inn and Suites, Hampton Inn on Bay street and Holiday Inn Mulberry. The best price in Hampton Inn and Suites. How far is it from the action at the historic district.

Also, is the area save at night?

    Thanks for your input.

Une day in Savannah - hotel

The most centrally located one would be the Hampton on Bay. I would think it also would be the safest at night.

The Mulberry is on the Eastern Edge of the Historic area and the Hampton Inn and Suites is on the western edge.

Une day in Savannah - hotel

All are only a few block from the center of the action and general business. I would not let location be the deciding factor.

If it is late and you don%26#39;t feel comfortable, take a pedi-cab the daughters would love it. They hang out at Broughton and Bull St.

Thanks for the info. We%26#39;re staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites.

    five days spare in Atlanta

At the end of May my wife and I will be dropped off at the Airport having just completed an organised tour of Memphis, Chatanooga, Gracelands etc ,the rest of our party will be flying home but we have extended our trip by 5 days, on the last day we will get back up to atlanta the night before to ensure we catch our flight.

Question where should we go for three nights? We visited Charleston two years ago and loved that, is savannah very similar? Can we get to New Orleans %26amp; back?

    thanks for any Advice

    JS

    five days spare in Atlanta

You would be doubling back if you came to Atlanta from Memphis and then drove back to New Orleans. I think Savannah and Charleston are much better experiences than New Orleans. Savannah is a good choice as is a beach location at the end of May. It depends what kind of experience you%26#39;re looking for.

    five days spare in Atlanta

I am going to take a weekend trip to Altanta in May and I%26#39;m going to take a day trip to Warm Springs. You can visit were Roosevelt stayed to have his therapy. We are also going to the Jimmy Carter Presidential library.

Hope you have great time what ever you do.

Thanks for the advice, our tour is actually, Atlanta, Chatanooga, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta by coach so no driving. We plan to hire a car at Atlanta airport and return 5 days later, where to go in between? Not sure about Savannah but would like to see New Orleans, I see on Google maps its a 7 hour drive, is there a good stopover on route, I have heard most of the route CITY AND TOWN names before but dont know much about them?

    thanks

    JS

If you have your heart set on New Orleans, and you%26#39;re getting dropped off at the airport anyway from your coach tour, you could fly instead of driving -- r/t airfare from Atlanta typically runs $160-$170 for a 21-day advance purchase ticket. Car rental and gas (at least $100 for 50 gallons or so for a 1000 mile round-trip) are going to come close to that anyway, and you%26#39;re looking at a 2-hour flight instead of a 7 hour drive.

If you don%26#39;t mind taking even longer and having no flexibility at all about when you go, you could take the train (Amtrak) -- New Orleans is one of the few places you actually can get to from Atlanta by train. Fares would start at about $116; each way, the train will leave in the early morning and arrive at the destination about 12 hours later (there%26#39;s only one train a day in each direction).

Savannah%26#39;s a great town, and if you loved Charleston you should love it as much or more -- they%26#39;re alike, but just different enough that seeing one doesn%26#39;t mean you%26#39;ve seen %26#39;em both. It%26#39;s about a 4 hour drive or a one-hour flight (Delta has several flights daily -- fares start around $130 r/t).

I would go one of two ways after a whirl-wind tour, so that I could just take some time to relax. Either visit one of the beaches on the pan-handle of Florida (Destin - one of the best close beaches) or GA (Cumberland Island to see the wildlife); or i would rent a cabin in the Smokey MTn National Park Area (Tennessee). Both areas are about the same driving distance from Atlanta.

I think you%26#39;ll find most people on this board will steer you to Savannah over New Orleans. If you want a different perspective, try posting the same question on the New Orleans forum.

I don%26#39;t think you could go wrong either way. Savannah is simply beautiful. You%26#39;re correct that it%26#39;s quite similar to Charleston - with the British Colonial style very prevalent. New Orleans is very interesting, and beautiful as well. You%26#39;ll see more of a French Influence, and it%26#39;s a bit grittier. If it%26#39;s New Orleans that interests you most, I would say go with that. I have a recommendation for a wonderful B%26amp;B if that interests you.

It%26#39;s a drive, but frankly I%26#39;ve driven to New Orleans for trips lasting 2-3 days, and a 5 day trip definitely makes the drive worthwhile. You%26#39;ll probably want a car when you get there.

I think you would be hard-pressed to fill 5 days sight-seeing in Savannah, but if you just want to spend some time relaxing or going to the beach that would be a nice trip.

Holiday Inn Select Near Turner Field

Can you walk to Turner Field from the Holiday Inn Select near the park?

Holiday Inn Select Near Turner Field

yes it is a short walk, maybe 1/2 mile at best.

Holiday Inn Select Near Turner Field

    Thanks!!!

While this is an easy walk, the area around Turner Field is not an area in which you would want to find yourself walking at any time other than around a Braves game. Also, other than Turner Field, there%26#39;s nothing there. If I were you I would find a hotel in a safer neighborhood that would have places like restaurants etc. in walking distance.

I don%26#39;t generally disagree with JAtlanta%26#39;s comments about the Turner Field area, but the HI Select is a special case. It%26#39;s right on Capitol Avenue, the street that runs beside Turner Field on the east side. Between the HI Select and Turner Field there%26#39;s nothing but stadium parking lots, and on game days there are police directing traffic and managing the crowds every few feet. I%26#39;ve walked along this route from farther away (Ga State MARTA station or Five Points station) many times and never had any issues -- there%26#39;s always tons of other people walking the same route and the police presence deters most problems. Just don%26#39;t stray off of Capitol onto the other side streets nearby.

Actually, I see that JAtlanta specifically said she wouldn%26#39;t recommend walking around that area at times *other than game times*, and that other areas would offer more dining and entertainment options in walking distance for the rest of the time you%26#39;re here. With which I completely agree.

Agree -- neighborhood isnt great (as it is in most american cities near the stadiums), but if you are walking to the braves game there will be several thousand pedestrians with you and a heavy police presence. If you are staying there just to catch a game, it will be fine; but if you are spending several days in atlanta and taking in one braves game, I would stay elsewhere.

Yeah, I think this area is perfectly fine during game days. There%26#39;s a huge police presence, and lots of fans around. Other than when there is a game, though, I don%26#39;t like this area.

Where would yall recommend staying? We are coming for 3 nights...And going to six flags and a Braves game. We have only visited Atlanta for a Braves game and stayed in the hotels right beside the stadium for convience when the game was over. If we stay somewhere else is there some type of public transportation to and from the game?

I would recommend downtown or midtown. If you stay there, or Buckhead you can take MARTA to the Braves game. Just take MARTA to the Five Points Station, and there will be a ton of shuttle buses running to and from Turner Field for $1 per person.

I can%26#39;t say that the Turner Field area has gotten any worse in the past ten years, so it you thought the Turner Field area was fine last time, you%26#39;ll probably find it the same way today.

3 ladies out for dinner and music?

sister in law, sister and friend looking for nice uptown restaurant and music - not too stuffy but not too trashy either . . . ideas certainly appreciated. Thankyou.

3 ladies out for dinner and music?

Where do you mean by uptown? Are you talking about Midtown or Buckhead?

I%26#39;d say Eclipse di Luna on Miami Circle, www.eclipsediluna. It%26#39;s a tapas bar that is lively with Latin music most nights.

3 ladies out for dinner and music?

Atlanta has so many restaurants that it%26#39;s really tough to make a suitable recommendation. If you%26#39;ll let us know what neighborhood, what price range, what type of food, what type of atmosphere, etc., that would help.

Oh, but Eclipse di Luna is a great recommendation.

charlotte%26#39;s uptown is their downtown so i assume she means downtown when she says uptown.

Good point. If gp0621 will confirm and give some details I will make some recommendations.

    Day trip to Charleston

We will be staying in Savannah for 3-4 days. Would you recommend a day trip to Charleston? If so, what are things we could do that don%26#39;t require a lot of walking? Magnolia Plantation etc

    Day trip to Charleston

The plantations are a lot of walking.

They have a nice little complex on the river that has a very good aquarium (it is big but has lots of places to sit and rest), an IMAX theater and tour boats out to Ft Sumter, where the ';recent unpleasantness'; began.

All that is worth seeing in my opinion.

Figure 2 hrs of driving each way.

    Day trip to Charleston

Though our Aquarium is beautiful, it would not be on my list of must-sees for a 1-day trip. And I wouldn%26#39;t hole myself up in a theater, either - especially since it%26#39;s no longer there. (IMAX will be in another part of the city when it reopens in ???)

What I would do if I had a day is go to Anson Street (it intersects Market, the ';ground zero'; of the historic district) and take a carriage ride. If you book online you can get a discount, but expect to pay around $20/person including tip. For an hour, you enjoy a leisurely horse or mule-drawn ride through the Historic District (HD). It will give you a great perspective of the city. If you don%26#39;t get ';route 1'; (the rides are numbered so as not to have too many buggies in the same part of the city at the same time) then take a pedi-cab (SINCE you don%26#39;t want to walk) down East Bay Street, down to the WhitePoint Gardens (battery park) and up Meeting or King Street. If you got tired of sitting and could manage to do some walking you%26#39;d see so much more since even in a pedicab the little alleyways and garden gates will go by too quickly. Take a nice lunch at Magnolia%26#39;s and the short walk to the Pineapple Fountain on the water, overlooking Ft. Sumter. See the dolphins swim in the river right off of the HD and sit on one of the many swinging benches overlooking the river as you watch the freighters and cruise ships come and go. You can get a combination carriage ride and boat ride to Ft. Sumter - that is worth it and my least favorite class in school was history (can you believe I chose to move here - where history lives?)

Much to do and see - it%26#39;s about 1 hour 45 b/w cities and parking is VERY easy here - but since you want to cut down on walking you%26#39;ll end up in a lot or garage (they%26#39;re not expensive - just look for the blue ';P'; sign).

I agree that the plantations require a lot of walking and the good stuff is not that wheelchair-friendly (garden paths, historic home tours, etc).

Charleston is a compact but charming city with so much to do you%26#39;ll be happy you got the chance to visit. Enjoy! Drive carefully b/w the cities - there is a heavily-enforced speed limit.

Thanks for all your time and effort in your lovely reply. We just may do these things.

this weekend, going to the game, please help

    Which Ritz-Carlton? Downtown or Buckhead?

The best place to get answers on activities and restaurants would be to start off by looking through the Things to Do tab and reading older posts on this forum, then coming back here and asking more specific questions.

Re: the Ritz, if you chose that because you were looking for the most upscale hotel, something one would typically associate with that brand, you might want to reconsider. Both here are aging and there are nicer options. For downtown, look at the W, Twelve or the Ellis. For Buckhead, try the Intercontinental, W or Mansion at Peachtree.

You can either drive to the stadium, where there is ample parking all around, or take MARTA from downtown, midtown or Buckhead. It will take you to the Five Points station, where there is a shuttle running to Turner Field.

we take the MARTA from the Ritz downtown to Five Points and then we can catch a shuttle there that will take us directly to the entrance of the ballpark???

Yup. There will be lots of signs at the Five Points station and guards directing people to the buses. However, if you%26#39;re staying at the Ritz downtown just walk to the Five Points Marta station. There%26#39;s no need to get on the train. It%26#39;s just like 3 blocks.

I agree with J. Don%26#39;t stay at the Ritz for an upscale experience. It is within easy walking access to Five Points, though.

Down the hill from the Ritz is a decent Mexican restaurant called Mama Ninfa%26#39;s.

we just returned from a weekend trip at the Ritz and I%26#39;ll have to say it was top notch!! sooooo, just wanted to let you guys know, just in case you wanted to check it out again before guiding people away :) - we were treated unbelievably from the moment we walked through the door until we left - room was reallly nice and you could tell upgrade was a huge success - tons of nice little extra touches and treats (2 free drinks at atlanta grill) - turndown with roses on pillow one night ...... just really great luxury experience .... this is our 6th ritz we have stayed and it was as nice or nicer than others we have stayed at and customer service was a 10 for sure!!

There a quite a few great things to in Atlanta. Here%26#39;s a list of the top ten most popular things to do:

    what-are-the-best.com/the-best-atlanta-attra…

If you can only do one thing I would visit the Georgia Aquarium. It will only take 2-3 hours and it%26#39;s well worth the money. The World of Coca Cola is right across the street so you can work it in also without having to drive anywhere. If you looking for a great restaurant try Bacchanalia which is not too far from the downtown area and fairly easy to drive to.

    Sunday Brunch

We are going to Savannah next weekend (April 10-12) and I%26#39;m looking for a delicious sunday brunch. I%26#39;d rather not have a buffet. I%26#39;ve heard good things about the Firefly Cafe and Bistro Savannah...any suggestions?

    Sunday Brunch

Firefly is nice, good fresh food, not too crowded, in or outside seating, very good food. J Christophers is also nice, good breakfast and lunch, in and out seating, bigger and busier than Firefly.

    Sunday Brunch

I loved the blueberry crunch cakes at J. Christopher%26#39;s when I was there with friends a week ago. We had a bit of a wait - but things moved quickly and staff were very friendly.

I go for Kasey%26#39;s Grill (in an unassuming strip mall just across from Memorial Hospital) hands down. I%26#39;ve not had a better brunch in Savannah and I%26#39;ve brunched-around extensively. It%26#39;s table service...not buffet and everything%26#39;s memorably delicious. Good drinks, too, if you%26#39;re inclined.

    2 Days in Atlanta

    Hi,

Do you think that 2 full days (3 nights) would be enough to get a reasonable feel for Atlanta? We%26#39;d like to go to the civil rights museum, maybe the Coke museum and then just do a bit of shopping. We were thinking about staying in a B%26amp;B (maybe the Gaslight?) and leaving the car and travelling on the subway if possible.

Also, one more thing. Do you think it%26#39;d be doable to drive from Atlanta to Pensacola or would we need a night%26#39;s stopover on the way? I don%26#39;t really want to waste a night (and there doesn%26#39;t seem to be much in between the two places) but I don%26#39;t want to be sick of driving either.

    Any advice mwould be appreciated,

    Thanks,

    Steve.

    2 Days in Atlanta

Yes, I think that would be enough time to get a feel of ATL. Driving from Atlanta to Pensacola at one time? For me...definitely, 5 hours really isn%26#39;t all that much in a days time.

    2 Days in Atlanta

Yeah, I think you%26#39;d have enough time to get a feel for the city. I am not familiar with the Gaslight, but you%26#39;ll want to make sure there%26#39;s a MARTA station in walking distance in selecting a hotel.

You can easily drive to Pensacola in one day.

I%26#39;ve done the Atlanta-Pensacola drive many times and would not dream of stopping overnight. It%26#39;s a very easy (and very boring) 5-hour-ish drive.

PS: I think the Gaslight is in a great location if you have a car, but it%26#39;s not convenient to any MARTA station. I used to live just a few doors down from it and people who have stayed there have seemed to like it. If you want to travel by MARTA, you should stay somewhere within a couple of blocks of a station.

Great.. thanks guys! That%26#39;ll save me a night!

I%26#39;ll look again at the MARTA thing... thanks. I%26#39;m guessing that%26#39;s the best way to get around.

Bye the way, is Pensacola to New Orleans equally doable?

    PS

We will have a car but I just have the impression of Atlanta being huge and scary to drive around and find parking etc.

Pensacola - New Orleans is a much shorter trip. 3-3.5 hrs, maybe? I%26#39;ve never done it straight through but it can%26#39;t be more than 4.

But there are some interesting stops along the way if you want to stop to dine or sightsee. Biloxi is about halfway and has casinos and lots of restaurants, and is an eye-opening demonstration of Katrina%26#39;s destruction (as are all the beach towns between Biloxi and NO).

I am flying from Peru to the UK with a connecting flight at Atlanta. I have 9 1/2 hours at Atlanta and was wondering whether I would be allowed out of the airport and what restrictions there may be?

    exiting Atlanta airport

Yes, you will be able to leave the airport and see a bit of atlanta. Once you land you will go through immigration then customs. After that you can leave the airport and use MARTA to come into the city. Be sure to be back at the airport no less that two hours before your UK flight.

Airport to Omni at CNN Center

Wondering how easy it is to get from the airport to the Omni at CNN Center. Thank you

Airport to Omni at CNN Center

Just take MARTA from the airport - you can get on any train. Get off at Five Points station. Get on the Westbound train. Go one stop. It lets off right at the Omni. Look here: www.itsmarta.com

Airport to Omni at CNN Center

Thank you...it seems very simple. Can I assume that all stops and trains are easily recognizable? I%26#39;ve read that the MARTA system can be confusing. How easy will it be to find the transfer to the Westbound train?

    Thank you

MARTA is not at all confusing. It%26#39;s the most basic public transit system I have ever experienced. All of the stops are clearly marked, and there is a loudspeaker announcement before each stop. No need to worry.

The MARTA train system is dead simple (the buses are another matter entirely). From the airport, get on any train -- the airport%26#39;s the end of the line, and all the trains go through Five Points station. When you get to Five Points, get off the train and follow the signs that direct you to the Westbound trains -- that%26#39;ll mean up an escalator or elevator one level to the Westbound platform for the East-West line. Get on the train, go one stop, get off again. You%26#39;re there.

There%26#39;s plentiful signage in each station, as well as audio announcements of each station as you approach. At each stop, there are signs indicating which station you%26#39;re in that are visible from inside the train, so you%26#39;ll have no trouble telling where you are. Bonus tip: Five Points station is the first station after you board at the airport where the doors open on both sides of the train -- if you see them both open, GET OFF! ;-)

Seriously, you shouldn%26#39;t have any trouble at all.

Thanks for all your help. If we want to visit the underground, we would just get on at the same station and take the East bound train 1 stop and we should be back at 5 points station?

Yep. Don%26#39;t get your hopes up too high for Underground, though. Not much of interest there anymore.

  • Girls weekend in Savannah, recommendations???

We have Fri and Sat nights in Savannah to celebrate a birthday, ladies 25-35, like good wine, food, music and would like to see as much as possible....And looking for a good Sunday brunch to send us on our way...

    Girls weekend in Savannah, recommendations???

Take a trolley tour, hop off and check out anything you find interesting. Get the on/off trolley tour, then you can use it like a shuttle all day.

Jazz%26#39;d tapas is fun, has a pretty good wine selection and usually has good music, fun for sharing around unusual foods.

Il Pasticcio is good food fun spot to sit and watch people, they have music on the weekends.

Wander City Market and River Street, just fun spots where people hang out on a weekend evening.

    trip review Mar 30-Apr 1.

My husband and I, and our 2 children (girl 13, boy 12) recently traveled to Savannah for a short trip. It was our first visit. We drove from Florida.

Monday/Mar 30 - Arrived around 11:30 a.m. We were able to check into our hotel, even though check in is stated at 4 pm. We stayed at the Inn at Ellis Square in the Historic District. The hotel staff was very friendly. We had a standard room, which was very clean. Nice bedding and a mounted plasma tv. I enjoyed the Hotel, and don%26#39;t have any complaints. They serve a complimentary continental breakfast. Parking for the Hotel is right next door in a parking garage. The charge was $9.00 a day. Only Hotel patrons could park there, as they give you a card key to get in and out of the garage. The Hotel is in an excellent location in the Historic District on Bay Street.

We walked from our hotel, to the Information/Welcome Center (located on Martin Luther King) and decided to do the Oglethorpe Trolly Tour. The cost was $10.00 a person. The tour is 90 minutes long. After the tour, you have on/off privileges until 5:30 pm. We enjoyed the tour and learned some interesting facts, and saw all the squares, and highlights of the historic area. After the tour, we ate lunch on River Street (I can%26#39;t remember the name of the resteraunt, but it was good - we were starving!), strolled along river street and looked in the shops, and the kids had ice cream. We saw various boats/tug boats on the River, and enjoyed people watching. We also did the Ghost Walk Ghost Talk -Ghost Tour that evening. For the money, it wasn%26#39;t bad - although I would have enjoyed a different type of one. It was my children%26#39;s first one, so they thought it was fun. We saw the ghost/gravestones trolley bus and also a hearse tour while on our tour, so they seemed to make most of our same stops. We got pizza from Vinnie%26#39;s which is in City Market, right behind our hotel. We took the pizza back to the hotel with us. The pizza was delicious, I honestly think the best I have ever had!

Tuesday/Mar 31 - We drove to Fort Pulaski - took about 20-25 minutes. We all enjoyed learning the history behind the Fort. It is very well preserved. It was one of the Highlights of our trip. We then drove to Tybee Island, which is a short drive from the Fort. The Lighthouse was not open, so we did not get to go there. The weather was overcast and cool, but my kids waded in the beach anyway and we sat on a wooden swing for awhile just enjoying the relaxation. We ate lunch at Five Guys (a chain I know, but we were in a hurry!) which is right across the street from our hotel. We took the 2 pm sailing on the Dolphin Magic to see Dolphins. We did see quite a few dolphins. It is about a 2 hour trip. The first mate gives you alot of history and information during the trip out to the ocean. It was cold and windy, but we had a great time. The kids also enjoyed it. We ate dinner at the Pirate House. The food was very good, but quite expensive. We got desert at Lulu%26#39;s chocolate Bar later that evening - which was delighful! The kids had ice cream.

We left Wed morning- the weather was getting bad with rain, so we decided to just head home instead of doing anything else.

We enjoyed our trip very much. My kids enjoyed it also. It was nice to be able to walk around and see the historic distric and learn the history of the city, and see the beautiful architecture. We will definately return one day.

Thank you for posting your trip reprt. We are coming to Savannah next month, and I appreciated the information, especially about the Oglethorpe Trolley.

Rental Car that doesn't charge for people under 25?

Are there any rental car places that don%26#39;t charge for people under 25 years old? It%26#39;s really annoying when I try to find a car to rent and I have $100-150 to do it

    Thanks!!

can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

We are staying at the Red Roof Inn in Midtown.

My question is can you use the Cat system to get to historic Savannah?? Any imput on this or on other ways to travel from midtown to historic district are welcome.

can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

Yes! You will be very close to Abercorn Street, just about a 1 to 2 block walk west from your hotel. The CAT Bus #14 runs up and down Abercorn to the Historict Disctrict all day and into the evening. Also check with the Red Roof - when it was a Hampton Inn, they had a shuttle van to the Historic District, and if I am not mistaken, I think I have seen the van with the lettering changed to Red Roof.

can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

Yes. CAT -- Chatham Area Transit ---buses run to the historic district from Abercorn St, which is one block west from the Red Roof on Stephenson Ave. Abercorn is a major north-south bus route. Check the CAT website.

There are a couple of tour companies running complimentary downtown shuttles to %26amp; from the area, Old Savannah Tours and Old Town Trolley are 2 that come to mind. This is on the assumption that your hotel concierge or desk person has sold you a ticket for that company%26#39;s particular tour, and the shuttles will pick you up in the a.m. and take you to the tour, and return you to the hotel later in the day. If you%26#39;re going to take a guided trolley tour, this is the way to go, with service at your hotel front door.

But if you want to pay for public bus transportation, that%26#39;s fine, too.

    Thanks guys!

If your responses are any example of how nice people in Savannah are...I can%26#39;t wait to experience it in person!

My mom and I are coming down next wk and we talk everyday about things we want to do and see.

We will not be driving...our plan was to take a taxi from the airport and yes the hotel does have a shuttle but we wanted to check the buses just in case. The shuttle in case anyone wants to know is run Thurs thru Sunday from the Red Roof.

As first time visitors any suggestions for us???

We can%26#39;t to visit in Savannah and Iwill post after we come back !!

    Thanks Again!!!!!:)

  • any very new motels on I-95 in that area?

  • Sweet Grass Dairy

If you are in Thomasville stop by the Sweet Grass dairy on US 19 just out of town and get some of their wonderful cheeses. They sell to some very good restaurants and it is your chance to really taste some wonderful cheeses. The farm is a bit up the road and you can see the goats and the pastures. Wonderful cheese!

    savannah midtown hotels and motels

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the great advice on your forum. There will be 3 of us coming in June. We have a car so we won%26#39;t need accommodations downtown. I have looked at Hilton Garden Inn, Ogelthorpe Inn and Towneplace Suites. We will need a suite or two rooms since there will be three of us.I understand that the Ogelthorpe Trolley Tours are only $l0.00. Is that correct? Can you get on and off? My Mom is 88 and can%26#39;t walk a lot but the trolley tours should be okay for her. Thanks for all your help.

    KALNorthCarolina

    savannah midtown hotels and motels

I think the Towneplace Suites is fairly new. I don%26#39;t even remember seeing it the last time I was out that way.

The Oglethorpe is probably the closest to various restaurants, etc. It%26#39;s the most attractive, if that matters.

And the Hilton is newer than the Oglethorpe. It%26#39;s also a multistoried building with not much eye appeal.

That%26#39;s about all the help I can give. Perhaps others will have more to offer.

    savannah midtown hotels and motels

    KAL,

We usually stay in the HD along Bay Street, but making a last minute visit this coming weekend and will be using some Marriott points to stay at the SpringHill Suites in Midtown. Will be a hassle commuting down to the HD, but there are a number of parking garages that are pretty convenient.

Yes, Ogelethorpe Trolley is $10 per person and it is something we always do when we are in Savannah. Each guide has a little bit different spin or story to tell so it is always interesting. There is a little bit of a ';catch'; to the on/off service that if you understand shouldn%26#39;t present any problems. When you first board the trolley by the Welcome Center; or their head office nearby, you are on a 90-minute non-stop tour with no on/off privledges for that initial time. Once the tour concludes near City Market you have the option to going back to your starting point or you can tell the guide which drop-off point you would like to go to. While it is possible the guide can drop you off on the way back to the Welcome Center to start the next tour, more than likely they will call one of their roving trolleys to come pick you up. But be aware that when you want to go to another location, you will need to call their office phone and ask that the rover be sent back to you. Sometimes you can be waiting as long as 15 minutes for pick-up. Many people find they can walk to where they want to go faster than waiting on the rover; but I understand your issue with your Mom%26#39;s limited mobility as we will be dealing with the same thing with my MIL.

The other trolley tours seem to have the more traditional on-off at any time routine; but their price is 2 times or more than that of Ogelthorpe; so you pay more for additional flexibility. From what I can tell, all the trolley companies run virtually the same routes so you don%26#39;t ';see'; more on one than another.

    Hope this is helpful.

One Restaurant that is a must

Since we%26#39;re going to be in Savannah one day only, what restaurant is a must. I think Paula Deen%26#39;s is overrated for what I have read.

What is a good breakfast place in historic district?

    Best lunch and dinner places?

    Thanks

One Restaurant that is a must

Will your visit be on a weekday? We love the southern family-style lunch (not open for dinner or on weekends!) at Mrs. Wilkes. You can look at the day%26#39;s offering on their website. Get there early....they open at 11 so it%26#39;s best to get there as early as you can to avoid waiting in line.

One Restaurant that is a must

We%26#39;ll be getting there on a Thursday (late afternoon) and leaving Friday late afternoon

Looks like you could do lunch on Friday afternoon there..... Mrs. Wilkes has always been on our ';must-do at least once'; short list! You will be seated at a big table, family-style and bowls and platters of all kinds of yummy southern food are brought out and passed around the table. I believe it%26#39;s around $15 per person and trust me, you won%26#39;t walk away hungry!!

The Wilkes House ( aka Mrs. Wilkes%26#39; House) is a true Savannah institution. Lunch only, M-F, 11am -2pm.

Arrive by 10:30 am if you wish to eat at 11, the opening time--skip breakfast or just have morning coffee to appreciate the food you%26#39;ll be served.

207 West Jones St., in the historic district.

Amen to the other contributors for Mrs. Wilkes. I ate there last week and had the following:

    Spiced beets

    candied yams

    cheesy mashed potatoes

    pole beans

    black-eyed peas

    dressing and gravy

    cole slaw

    turnip greens

    cabbage

    squash

    beef stew

    fried chicken

    blueberry cobbler

    cornbread

    I didn%26#39;t make room for

    red rice

    white rice

    lima beans

    okra succotash

    banana pudding

Truth is, there were probably 3 or 4 more dishes on the table that I can%26#39;t remember.

It is now $16 cash only - no traveller%26#39;s checks or credit cards

A real ';sleeper';. But if I had a guest who had only one dinner opportunity in Savannah, I%26#39;d take them to Kasey%26#39;s Grill. It%26#39;s in midtown in a little strip mall across from Memorial Hospital. Had dinner there recently with an out-of-town guest and it was just perfect. One had shrimp and grits, one had stuffed snapper and one had scored flounder. Everything was cooked to exact requested preferences, the wine was wonderful, the Oysters Rockefeller was divine. %26#39;Twas all just grand. Oh, and.....atmosphere and service great, too.

The Old Pink House for lunch or dinner would be my pick.

    reservations a must.

Kacey%26#39;s Grill is wonderful but is several miles from the historic district, in a strip shopping center surrounded by doctors offices %26amp; a hospital. Kacey%26#39;s works well for us locals but if you%26#39;re touring in Savannah for one day only, I recommend that you stay within the historic downtown side.

A new breakfast place winning raves is Harris Bakery, on the groud level of Drayton Towers, the funky glass building on E. Liberty %26amp; Drayton St. The newspaper food critic rated Harris%26#39; French toast as the best in Savannah. Their baked goods are made from scratch daily.

But the reviewer dissed Harris%26#39; filthy bathroom. Eat there but avoid the loo. After the recent newspaper review perhaps Mr Harris will get going with some Old Dutch Cleanser and Lysol.

Around the corner on E. Liberty %26amp; Abercorn St. is J Christopher%26#39;s. Locals go there in droves for breakfast...open till 2pm. daily.

Certainly recommend J Christopher%26#39;s as a great breakfast spot. Nice variety, friendly staff.

We had breakfast a couple of times at B. Matthews on Bay Street close to where we stayed at the Mulberry Inn. Very funky, good menu. For dinner one night we tried Cha Bella%26#39;s ,also on that side of town and it was great, pricey, but great. There are a ton of postings here comparing places so enjoy all the reading!

  • Cheaper cabin rentals either North or South of Atlanta

Hi to All! I am looking for cabine rentals for a quick weekend from Sat-Monday. Is anyone familiar or can recommend some cabin rentals that might work? I am familiar with VRBO as well as vacationrentals.com. Any other websites or similar I can search for? Most places want a week only, or have outrageous fees....? Any suggestions welcome!

flipkey.com is a primarily cabin based site.

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

We will be back in Savannah in two weeks with my mother- in - law who is 85. We would love to have lunch at Mrs. Wilkes having heard all the great reviews. Is there parking in that area and a place to sit nearby while waiting? We plan to arrive at 10:30 as suggested for early seating.

I hate to have her stand for a long period of time.

    Any suggestions?

I don%26#39;t have any idea where the Historic District is located and if there is parking in that area.

    Thank you.

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

There is on street parking in the area. If you get there that early you may get a spot pretty close. The people in the nearby homes will have left for work, leaving empty spots.

If you can park close, maybe your mom can sit in the car while you wait for a table, otherwise there are just peoples stoops to sit on.

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

When I was there (couple of years ago) there was one bench to sit on and it was already occupied at 10:30am. Other than that, there were steps leading up to the 2nd floor...some were sitting on the steps. And then, aside from that, there is waiting in your car. Will you have a car with you? I%26#39;d try to get my hands on a lawn chair ... something that you could leave by the door while eating.

Thanks for the information. We will have our car so it looks like we will have her wait there.

How far is Mrs. Wilkes from River Street?

    Thnaks.

It is about 15 to 20 blocks. How about a folding chair?

That%26#39;s a great idea as well. We have a place in Hilton Head so it%26#39;s easy to grab a folding chair and take it with us.

When we went last month, we called ahead because my dad is on oxygen. We had to wait in line, but they allowed Dad to sit inside on a seat right inside the door.

She is not in the same situation as your father but I%26#39;ll check and see what they say. Thank you
