can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

We are staying at the Red Roof Inn in Midtown.

My question is can you use the Cat system to get to historic Savannah?? Any imput on this or on other ways to travel from midtown to historic district are welcome.

can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

Yes! You will be very close to Abercorn Street, just about a 1 to 2 block walk west from your hotel. The CAT Bus #14 runs up and down Abercorn to the Historict Disctrict all day and into the evening. Also check with the Red Roof - when it was a Hampton Inn, they had a shuttle van to the Historic District, and if I am not mistaken, I think I have seen the van with the lettering changed to Red Roof.

can you use Cat In Midtown to get to historic district??

Yes. CAT -- Chatham Area Transit ---buses run to the historic district from Abercorn St, which is one block west from the Red Roof on Stephenson Ave. Abercorn is a major north-south bus route. Check the CAT website.

There are a couple of tour companies running complimentary downtown shuttles to %26amp; from the area, Old Savannah Tours and Old Town Trolley are 2 that come to mind. This is on the assumption that your hotel concierge or desk person has sold you a ticket for that company%26#39;s particular tour, and the shuttles will pick you up in the a.m. and take you to the tour, and return you to the hotel later in the day. If you%26#39;re going to take a guided trolley tour, this is the way to go, with service at your hotel front door.

But if you want to pay for public bus transportation, that%26#39;s fine, too.

Thanks guys!

If your responses are any example of how nice people in Savannah are...I can%26#39;t wait to experience it in person!

My mom and I are coming down next wk and we talk everyday about things we want to do and see.

We will not be driving...our plan was to take a taxi from the airport and yes the hotel does have a shuttle but we wanted to check the buses just in case. The shuttle in case anyone wants to know is run Thurs thru Sunday from the Red Roof.

As first time visitors any suggestions for us???

We can%26#39;t to visit in Savannah and Iwill post after we come back !!

Thanks Again!!!!!:)

  • any very new motels on I-95 in that area?

We%26#39;ll probably be at a stopping point somewhere around there. Don%26#39;t want something old, smokey, etc; hope to find someplace new, fresh, very quiet. Possible? Thanks!

  • Sweet Grass Dairy

If you are in Thomasville stop by the Sweet Grass dairy on US 19 just out of town and get some of their wonderful cheeses. They sell to some very good restaurants and it is your chance to really taste some wonderful cheeses. The farm is a bit up the road and you can see the goats and the pastures. Wonderful cheese!

    savannah midtown hotels and motels

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the great advice on your forum. There will be 3 of us coming in June. We have a car so we won%26#39;t need accommodations downtown. I have looked at Hilton Garden Inn, Ogelthorpe Inn and Towneplace Suites. We will need a suite or two rooms since there will be three of us.I understand that the Ogelthorpe Trolley Tours are only $l0.00. Is that correct? Can you get on and off? My Mom is 88 and can%26#39;t walk a lot but the trolley tours should be okay for her. Thanks for all your help.

I think the Towneplace Suites is fairly new. I don%26#39;t even remember seeing it the last time I was out that way.

The Oglethorpe is probably the closest to various restaurants, etc. It%26#39;s the most attractive, if that matters.

And the Hilton is newer than the Oglethorpe. It%26#39;s also a multistoried building with not much eye appeal.

That%26#39;s about all the help I can give. Perhaps others will have more to offer.

    KAL,

We usually stay in the HD along Bay Street, but making a last minute visit this coming weekend and will be using some Marriott points to stay at the SpringHill Suites in Midtown. Will be a hassle commuting down to the HD, but there are a number of parking garages that are pretty convenient.

Yes, Ogelethorpe Trolley is $10 per person and it is something we always do when we are in Savannah. Each guide has a little bit different spin or story to tell so it is always interesting. There is a little bit of a ';catch'; to the on/off service that if you understand shouldn%26#39;t present any problems. When you first board the trolley by the Welcome Center; or their head office nearby, you are on a 90-minute non-stop tour with no on/off privledges for that initial time. Once the tour concludes near City Market you have the option to going back to your starting point or you can tell the guide which drop-off point you would like to go to. While it is possible the guide can drop you off on the way back to the Welcome Center to start the next tour, more than likely they will call one of their roving trolleys to come pick you up. But be aware that when you want to go to another location, you will need to call their office phone and ask that the rover be sent back to you. Sometimes you can be waiting as long as 15 minutes for pick-up. Many people find they can walk to where they want to go faster than waiting on the rover; but I understand your issue with your Mom%26#39;s limited mobility as we will be dealing with the same thing with my MIL.

The other trolley tours seem to have the more traditional on-off at any time routine; but their price is 2 times or more than that of Ogelthorpe; so you pay more for additional flexibility. From what I can tell, all the trolley companies run virtually the same routes so you don%26#39;t ';see'; more on one than another.

    Hope this is helpful.

One Restaurant that is a must

Since we%26#39;re going to be in Savannah one day only, what restaurant is a must. I think Paula Deen%26#39;s is overrated for what I have read.

What is a good breakfast place in historic district?

    Best lunch and dinner places?

    Thanks

One Restaurant that is a must

Will your visit be on a weekday? We love the southern family-style lunch (not open for dinner or on weekends!) at Mrs. Wilkes. You can look at the day%26#39;s offering on their website. Get there early....they open at 11 so it%26#39;s best to get there as early as you can to avoid waiting in line.

One Restaurant that is a must

We%26#39;ll be getting there on a Thursday (late afternoon) and leaving Friday late afternoon

Looks like you could do lunch on Friday afternoon there..... Mrs. Wilkes has always been on our ';must-do at least once'; short list! You will be seated at a big table, family-style and bowls and platters of all kinds of yummy southern food are brought out and passed around the table. I believe it%26#39;s around $15 per person and trust me, you won%26#39;t walk away hungry!!

The Wilkes House ( aka Mrs. Wilkes%26#39; House) is a true Savannah institution. Lunch only, M-F, 11am -2pm.

Arrive by 10:30 am if you wish to eat at 11, the opening time--skip breakfast or just have morning coffee to appreciate the food you%26#39;ll be served.

207 West Jones St., in the historic district.

Amen to the other contributors for Mrs. Wilkes. I ate there last week and had the following:

    Spiced beets

    candied yams

    cheesy mashed potatoes

    pole beans

    black-eyed peas

    dressing and gravy

    cole slaw

    turnip greens

    cabbage

    squash

    beef stew

    fried chicken

    blueberry cobbler

    cornbread

    I didn%26#39;t make room for

    red rice

    white rice

    lima beans

    okra succotash

    banana pudding

Truth is, there were probably 3 or 4 more dishes on the table that I can%26#39;t remember.

It is now $16 cash only - no traveller%26#39;s checks or credit cards

A real ';sleeper';. But if I had a guest who had only one dinner opportunity in Savannah, I%26#39;d take them to Kasey%26#39;s Grill. It%26#39;s in midtown in a little strip mall across from Memorial Hospital. Had dinner there recently with an out-of-town guest and it was just perfect. One had shrimp and grits, one had stuffed snapper and one had scored flounder. Everything was cooked to exact requested preferences, the wine was wonderful, the Oysters Rockefeller was divine. %26#39;Twas all just grand. Oh, and.....atmosphere and service great, too.

The Old Pink House for lunch or dinner would be my pick.

    reservations a must.

Kacey%26#39;s Grill is wonderful but is several miles from the historic district, in a strip shopping center surrounded by doctors offices %26amp; a hospital. Kacey%26#39;s works well for us locals but if you%26#39;re touring in Savannah for one day only, I recommend that you stay within the historic downtown side.

A new breakfast place winning raves is Harris Bakery, on the groud level of Drayton Towers, the funky glass building on E. Liberty %26amp; Drayton St. The newspaper food critic rated Harris%26#39; French toast as the best in Savannah. Their baked goods are made from scratch daily.

But the reviewer dissed Harris%26#39; filthy bathroom. Eat there but avoid the loo. After the recent newspaper review perhaps Mr Harris will get going with some Old Dutch Cleanser and Lysol.

Around the corner on E. Liberty %26amp; Abercorn St. is J Christopher%26#39;s. Locals go there in droves for breakfast...open till 2pm. daily.

Certainly recommend J Christopher%26#39;s as a great breakfast spot. Nice variety, friendly staff.

We had breakfast a couple of times at B. Matthews on Bay Street close to where we stayed at the Mulberry Inn. Very funky, good menu. For dinner one night we tried Cha Bella%26#39;s ,also on that side of town and it was great, pricey, but great. There are a ton of postings here comparing places so enjoy all the reading!

  • Cheaper cabin rentals either North or South of Atlanta

Hi to All! I am looking for cabine rentals for a quick weekend from Sat-Monday. Is anyone familiar or can recommend some cabin rentals that might work? I am familiar with VRBO as well as vacationrentals.com. Any other websites or similar I can search for? Most places want a week only, or have outrageous fees....? Any suggestions welcome!

Cheaper cabin rentals either North or South of Atlanta

flipkey.com is a primarily cabin based site.

Thank you, I will try that one......

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

We will be back in Savannah in two weeks with my mother- in - law who is 85. We would love to have lunch at Mrs. Wilkes having heard all the great reviews. Is there parking in that area and a place to sit nearby while waiting? We plan to arrive at 10:30 as suggested for early seating.

I hate to have her stand for a long period of time.

    Any suggestions?

I don%26#39;t have any idea where the Historic District is located and if there is parking in that area.

    Thank you.

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

There is on street parking in the area. If you get there that early you may get a spot pretty close. The people in the nearby homes will have left for work, leaving empty spots.

If you can park close, maybe your mom can sit in the car while you wait for a table, otherwise there are just peoples stoops to sit on.

    Questions regarding Mrs. Wilkes

When I was there (couple of years ago) there was one bench to sit on and it was already occupied at 10:30am. Other than that, there were steps leading up to the 2nd floor...some were sitting on the steps. And then, aside from that, there is waiting in your car. Will you have a car with you? I%26#39;d try to get my hands on a lawn chair ... something that you could leave by the door while eating.

Thanks for the information. We will have our car so it looks like we will have her wait there.

How far is Mrs. Wilkes from River Street?

    Thnaks.

It is about 15 to 20 blocks. How about a folding chair?

That%26#39;s a great idea as well. We have a place in Hilton Head so it%26#39;s easy to grab a folding chair and take it with us.

When we went last month, we called ahead because my dad is on oxygen. We had to wait in line, but they allowed Dad to sit inside on a seat right inside the door.

She is not in the same situation as your father but I%26#39;ll check and see what they say. Thank you
