Hello,
I would love to hear any recomendations anyone has for a quaint area in Georgia, South Carolina or North Carolina. We are a family of 6 ladies including one (spry but not athletic) senior citizen. We are not interested in sports or beaches for this trip. Ideally we would be able to visit 1-3 places and are interested in historic areas, (especially large estates), shopping and good restaurants and walking tours. We are planning on a 5 day trip in July.
A base in a larger city like Savannah or Charleston with the ability to do daytrips would be ideal but not necessary. At this point we are very flexible and just want to hear what your ideal trip would be!
Thanks!
Jennifer
Where to go in the deep south?
Check into Beaufort, South Carolina. I think it would be right up your alley!

A trip we%26#39;ve done several times:
2 nights in Savannah %26amp; 2 nights in Charleston-both have wonderful restaurants, shopping and beautiful historical downtown areas.
Stop in Beaufort for lunch and site seeing downtown on your way to Charleston from Savannah. The drive between the cities is beautiful and is only a couple of hours. Beaufort is a quaint lowcounty town with some good restaurants and nice shops. The old historical homes downtown are beautiful.
Cumberland Island National Seashore is an awesome day trip experience. Have to take ferry to island. Walking required on island to see sights. Get off at Dungeness dock. Could stay in downtown St Mary%26#39;s before and after trip.
This could be added to Savannah, which is awesome. St Mary%26#39;s is more small town than big city.
If you do Cumberland Island, you could combine with Jekyll Island State Park and St Simon%26#39;s Island. However, activities there are more beach oriented on Jekyll.
Cumberland is magical.
But for y%26#39;all I think the option of Savannah and Charleston stays would be pretty good. Beaufort might be good base with drives to Savannah and Charleston, but easier to just split the stay.
The big problem with all these places in July will be pretty intense heat.
One more thing. If you go to Savannah pay a bit extra to stay on Bay St. Much better access to sights without extra walking. Take the on/off Trolley trips to get to spots one day.
I would also suggest staying in downtown Charleston. However, you could save some money by staying across the bridge in Mount Pleasant.
If you go to Charleston, I recommend the Ft Sumter tour. This is where Civil War started. Nice bit of interesting history. With the added advantage that it is basically a harbor tour on the boat ride out. Can catch this at Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant or in downtown Charleston.
Charleston has the advantage of being relatively close to two or three ';plantation'; sites for visitors.
You might want to consider inside activities as well. It is typically very hot and humid in coastal areas in summer. We are from GA and have been driven to other places by the heat in Charleston. Savannah is a tit shadier, but still hot.
To me, Savannah and Charleston are the two tourism gems in GA and SC.
If you have specific questions feel free to contact me directly. Also check my name link out to see some of my postings that have info on both sights.
