I%26#39;m coming out in September and have this thing about state Capitols. I realize that Montgomery is 2 1/2 hours away...is there anything along the drive to see and do or in Montgomery for that matter?

The drive to Montgomery is pretty uneventful. Regarding things to do in Montgomery, if you enjoy going to the theatre and like Shakespeare check out the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

Montgomery has an interesting downtown area that could entertain you for a day or so. The First White House of the Confederacy is there. You can tour the Rosa Parks Museum, the Dexter Ave church where MLK led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and see the beautiful Civil Rights monument at the Southern Poverty Law Center. The riverfront area of downtown is nice, and played a key role in the Civil War. The Old Cloverdale area and Huntingdon College are beautiful.
although it is not a state capitol, you may want to visit FDR%26#39;s Little White House in Warm Springs. It is a short drive off of your path:

Callaway Gardens is just off I-85 near LaGrange, GA
It%26#39;s 15,000 acres of nature at her finest. Just went on Easter Sunday and it was absolutely beautiful.
