I am going to be in Athens for 2 days. No joke, I have been looking foward to the Down home cookin%26#39; and southern food. What are the best southern restaurants that I should go to no matter what? I want a ';real'; restaurant, no chains!!!! Thanks for all your help!!! Also, is Georgia known for their ribs? I%26#39;m sorry ';im from ny'; lol Thanks!

Go a few miles outside of Athens and try the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Ga. You need reservations for the weekend. Check out their website.

I would try the Southern Cross Ranch in Madison Georgia.

They do a fantastic Southern Buffet, though you do have to be there at 6pm sharp on a Sunday.

I answered your question in the Atlanta forum, but since you also mentioned athens, you should really think about a stop at the Varsity in either town (the worlds largest hot dog stand). No, its not country southern food, but it is an iconic GA restaurant, much like Nathans in new york or the two philly cheese places in philadelphia.

sorry, forgot about the ribs -- fatt matts rib shack is about as good as it gets, you can also google georgia pbs, as they ran an hour long special on GA and Atlanta BBQ a couple of years ago, and it is still a popular show when the aire it.

I forgot about Weaver Ds in Athens. There is also Adrians Place in Madison.

It depends if you want to head to Athens via 316 or go via I-20 and then head up 441.

Good country cooking in Athens: Peaches. It is near downtown but think it is only open for lunch not dinner. It is a great deal and fantastic. You can also check out the buffet at Fresh Air BBQ (also just lunch, I believe). It is on Hwy 29 N.
