We are staying at the Marriott Savannah Riverfront.
From what I understand that is at the far end of the River.
How safe is it to walk to town in the evening or day from the hotel? If we chose not to walk is there transportation to go back and forth in the evening?

During the day or evening, I would call it perfectly safe. Especially walking down the riverfront sidewalk.
I would not walk down the street just because people, as a rule, don%26#39;t, so drivers are less likely to be watching for pedestrians and it is a weird little hill on a corner.
It is only a couple blocks from the busy part of River Street to your hotel so I would not worry, even into the night 11-12 there will still be people milling around and people like cruising slowly down River Street so there is always cars moving by.
You can always catch a cab or pedi-cab if you want to but I would say it is quite safe to walk, especially down the river front sidewalk.

It will be safe. I would use the River Walk at river street and then to Bay Street. This is because of the cars. You do not want to walk up the hill along side of Bay street. It is on a curve and I do not think it%26#39;s safe. When you get there you will see what I mean.
Have fun.
