My friend and I are planning a trip to Atlanta in June. The last time we were there was for the Olympics and we had a drive of an hour to get into town.
This time we%26#39;re flying in and hope to visit car free. We would like to see a Braves game, MLK National Historic Site, Centennial Park and Coke for sure. Can we do all this without a car? We were thinking of staying somewhere on the MARTA line...Buckhead? Any suggestions for a hotel very close to the station?
My friend wants to eat at Maggianos and I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll try to hit the Varsity. Is this possible without a car?
Thanks for your help!
June trip-lots of questions
Yes, ll of this is possible on MARTA.
At the bottom of this article by Rackensack is a chart showing which sites are near which MARTA stations:
tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60898-c97240/Atlanta…
The Varsity is at the North Ave Station; Maggiano%26#39;s is at the Buckhead Station.
Google maps is a great resource for using MARTA, as it shows the location of each station.
Look here for a map of hotels near MARTA stations in Buckhead:

I would also recommend seeing Oakland Cemetery, Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
June trip-lots of questions
Awesome...thanks so much for the info.
Its possible, but would I rec%26#39;d it? No. After living in DC and always visiting cities with subway systems Atlanta%26#39;s stinks ---- and I%26#39;m from Atlanta. Marta is really slow to me and its a lot easier to just jump in a car and go where I need to go. At least consider renting a car for a day.
TraciJD05, you%26#39;re certainly entitled to your opinion, but in all honestly I believe you overstate the difficulty in getting around Atlanta *as a tourist*. Living here without a car is no fun (and I can say that with some authority, as I did it for several years in my younger days), but for someone who%26#39;s going to be staying on a hotel near a MARTA station and primarily going to tourist destinations that are within easy walking distance of other stations, it%26#39;s a perfectly viable way to get around. It%26#39;s not the T in Boston or the NYC subway system or the DC Metro, to be sure, and I could regale you for hours with tales of the grief I had to go through to get to and from work and around the city without a car, but that%26#39;s not the point in this case. The destinations the OP mentioned are all quite readily accessible via MARTA rail, without ever having to get on a bus. If she mentioned the Zoo, or Fernbank, or Stone Mountain, I would give (and have, in the past) very different counsel.
Maybe I%26#39;ve lived in Atlanta for 28 years - maybe I%26#39;m just young and impatient but the Marta is so slow its just not worthwhile to me and some good spots just aren%26#39;t close to a Marta. You can always give it a shot and rent a car if you need to - have fun in Atlanta!
I commutted on MARTA for years into downtown. For in town destinations, MARTA is often your best alternative. You don%26#39;t have to worry about one-way streets or parking. Sure it may take a little longer, but you%26#39;ll do yourself some good by walking and by avoiding the stress of driving in an unfamiliar area with $20/day parking fees. For a tourist, it%26#39;s much better than renting a car.
Not sure about taking Marta to see a Braves game cause Marta said something about doing away with the shuttle bus at underground atlanta
MARTA managed discussed a variety of possible service cutbacks, including eliminating the Braves Shuttle service, during the recent legislative session, as possible consequences of failing to lift the legal constraints that force MARTA to spend 50% of its revenue on capital projects, instead of operating expenses. No legislative relief was obtained, but stop-gap alternative measures have been identified and implemented. As a result, as far as I%26#39;m aware, there are no plans to end or curtail the Braves Shuttle service any time in the short term.
