We are planning a summer camping trip to Cumberland Island and want to take our bikes with us. The ferry doesn%26#39;t allow these on board and bikes rented by the park are limited. I%26#39;ve checked with the charter company recommended by the park and it seems to be quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions on alternate affordable transportation?
Thanks!
transportation to Cumberland Island
I think your only other alternative is if you have your own boat, know someone with a boat, or find a private charter company. If you are going for any length of time it%26#39;s definitely worth having your own bikes, it%26#39;s a pretty big island and walking everywhere will get old quick. Good Luck!
transportation to Cumberland Island
We have not found a good way to get bikes to island, it is ridiculously pricey. I think it is to make people rent the overpriced rental bikes. We did rent these once (and they go quickly). I recall no gears. Rental is a seacamp site.
Fairly easy riding from Seacamp to Dungeness site (Southward). But we could not make it to northern part of island (Plum Tree) due to long stretches of unridable soft sand on the one road. Also, the rental does not allow you to ride on beach.
I would just consider renting bikes for one day and walking to dungeness and other places.
Thanks for the reply. We have camped there before - probably 4 years ago and there were no bike rentals then. I decided then that a bike is a must since it%26#39;s a long way from one end of the island to the other.
It%26#39;s 17.6 miles from Seacamp to Plum Orchard. It can be done in one day but it%26#39;s hard. Our party consisted of 3 women ages 36 to 62, one teeange girl and one 11 yo boy.
We parked our bikes when the sand started to get too thick(near Stafford.) Next time, I will walk the bike thru the areas that the sand gets thick because the road becomes rideable again close to Plum Orchard.
When I priced the ferry vs. private charter, it was about $20-30 more to have a boat chartered. By the time you figure in ferry and bike rentals, the chartered boat was not that much more $.
cumberlandga,
Thanks. After some searching around, I can%26#39;t find but one charter company to the island. I do appreciate your advise about walking the bikes through the sandy parts. Can we ride all the way to the old church in the north? We would like to explore the north end of the island on this trip.
Thanks again!
If you left in the morning, you could probably make it up to the African Baptist Church. We left around noon and it was starting to get dark once we arrived back at camp. There are no lights on Cumberland, so trying to make your way home in dark would not be fun.
I have only seen the far North end of the island once. When we stayed at The Greyfield they have a
tour you can take.
Bring lots of deep woods bug spray. The bugs also stay away if your on your bike or running. It%26#39;s great exercise because you know if you stop your going to get eaten alive. When the Park Ranger passed us they stopped and doused us with spray because the mosquitos were swarming us. I think the can I brought was old and maybe lost it%26#39;s effectiveness.
You will see more wildlife than at Seacamp. We saw an alligator, wild boar, horses and armadillos.
