My husband and I are flying into Charleston and will stay 2 nights then go to Myrtle Beech for a week. We are hoping to stay in Downtown Charleston the first 2 nights; however we will probably have only one good day of sightseeing as we will be driving to Myrtle Beech the next day. After our stay in Myrtle Beech we have 5 days before we fly out of Charleston. We want to spend some time in Savannah. However which area would be the one to spend the most time. We will be there May 16-20th.
Also, we would like suggestions of what to do. We want to see historical sites as well as anything that would give us a good southern experience as we are coming from California and haven%26#39;t been south.
Savannah or Charleston, Where should we spend the most time?
My husband and I moved South this last fall and we%26#39;ve visited all three places. We enjoyed Charleston, but LOVED Savannah. Charleston and Savannah both have great history, but Charleston%26#39;s is a bit more spread out. Savannah is easier to see and enjoy because it%26#39;s focused in its awesome Historic District. We spent most of our time on foot in Savannah and saw everything we wanted to. in Charleston, we finally just got in the car and spent time driving from thing to thing, because there was no way to walk it and see a lot...it%26#39;s just too spread out. (and parking is a bit of a pain) On the other hand, there are plantations and gardens just outside Charleston that you should be sure to check out. They%26#39;re wonderful. In Charleston you can visit Fort Sumter, where the first shot of the Civil War was fired, but beware...it will take 30-40 min each way out to the fort by boat and then an hour at the fort. It pretty much eats up half your day. If you love history, it%26#39;s worth it. If you don%26#39;t, then you might want to skip it. Oh...and if you get to Savannah be sure to take the trolley tour. It%26#39;s a great fun trip around the Historic District, awesome for getting your bearings, and then you can use the trolley to get places when your feet give out. ;-) I recommend Oglethorpe tours. They have shuttles as well as the trolleys available, so you don%26#39;t get stuck if the later trolleys are full. Finally, when you%26#39;re in Myrtle Beach, enjoy the beach...but also check out some of the miniature golf places. They have tons of fun ones, especially Minotaur Golf. hope this helps.
